The Gala

On Saturday, April 22nd, the Hyde Park Art Center hosted its Grand Opening Gala, with over 500 guests. Visitors got a preview of our inaugural exhibition TAKEOVER, and mingled with artists and staff while exploring the entire building, classrooms, studios, exhibition galleries, offices, and more. During dinner, we watched a tribute video to Ruth Horwich, our honorary Board Chair, and she was presented with a special thank you gift for her many years of contributions to the Art Center. Each guest also received a copy of our commemorative book Perpetually Strange which chronicled the history of the Hyde Park Art Center. After dinner, staff and friends continued the celebration and danced the night away with cocktails, dessert, and good cheer.

Please be sure to join us as we open the entire building up the public during our Creative Move this weekend, April 29th and 30th. The Art Center will be open for 36 straight hours as we host performers, music, workshops, art classes, talks, and much more to kick off our new opening with a bang.

Artists, Construction, and the Facade

With construction workers in the building right up until the morning of the Gala, and their return the following week as we prepare for Creative Move, our grand opening celebration, it’s been a little crazy and hectic here at the Art Center, but so amazing! It’s a sight I’m not sure any of us will ever see again as artists worked and installed side by side with construction crews. A little bit surreal, but fascinating, nonetheless.

Chicago Teaching Artist Collective

A great group for teaching artists to check out is the Chicago Teaching Artist Collective. They host a monthly meeting with discussions about arts education, the teaching artist field, and community engagement through the arts. 4833 will be host for the May Meeting on Tuesday, May 16th, starting at 7pm.

4833 rph Program Series

One of the strong points of 4833 rph will be the variety of programs that we offer, and although some of these will be single workshops or individual interactions, we will also feature several continuing program series. TalkingPoint will be our non-format casual artist talk series, happening one monday each month. TalkShops are programs for teaching artists, parents, and educators focused on art education. We’ll also have professional development opportunities for teachers, events for teens and youth, and a spotlight each month of exemplars of youth arts education work throughout the city in our Flex Space. Keep checking back in for more.

Behind the Scenes reports!

We’ll post perspectives, thoughts, and insights from HPAC staff in this section to give you a glimpse of what it’s like to work for an organization like the Hyde Park Art Center, and how things go for us during our first year in a new building! Follow along!
