Teen Camp - Paper, Kick Boxing, and more!

Our Teen Campers are wrapping up their HPAC camp experience today, with a performance at 2pm on the second floor of our building. They’ve spent a great two weeks learning about improv, the environment, the arts, and even an impromptu kickboxing demo by our own Blake Bradford. Here’s hoping that they had a great time with Jessi and Mary, and that we see them back here again and again in the future!

Creativity Camp - Session 1

Our campers wrap Session 1 of our Summer Creativity Camps today! They perform at 2:30 pm in 4833, our Resource Center, so if you’re in the area, stop by and check it out! Thanks to all our camp teachers and assistants for making our first full camp session in the new building a great one. We hope they all had as much fun as we had having them here! Here are some images of the good times they had over the last two weeks.

"The Black Factory" makes a stop at the HPAC!

William Pope.L.’s Black Factory, “a mobile social service experiment” made a stop at the Hyde Park Art Center for this past Sunday’s opening of the newest exhibit, Home of the Free. Their station, comprised of a blow-up Black Factory igloo, podium and truck, served as an excellent forum for the community to gather and converse.

Teen Camp!

In a first for the Art Center, we now have Teen Camps! Our inaugural group of eight awesome teens have taken the Art Center by storm. Under the dutiful guidance of teaching artists Mary Tepper and Jessi Walsh, they’ve been working on tons of cool and fun projects. Check out a few photos of the group working on their relief panels, based on graphic images they found from art books in the 4833 library!

A Good Old-Fashioned BBQ!

To celebrate the opening of Home of the Free, HPAC’s newest exhibition curated by Jens Hoffmann, the Art Center hosted a free Barbecue on our plaza this past Sunday, June 25th. Burgers, Hot Dog, Chips, and more were part of the festivities as revelers were given a chance to express what their notion of Freedom is, either through donations of objects, pinning pieces up on our wall, or taking advantage of Hyde Park Corner, the Art Center’s own personal soapbox. Come take part in the exhibition and leave a piece of what you believe Freedom is.

A:List is now online!

There’s a new resource for teachers, collectors, curators, students… just about anyone looking for information on contemporary Chicago artists. Presenting A:List, the Hyde Park Art Center’s curated, online, artist database.

logo_alist.gif

A:List is intended to highlight the many artists who have taught or exhibited at HPAC in our 60 year history. The site is therefore a work in progress (with over 1500 artists who qualify, we’ve got a long way to go!), but take a look at the site and visit again soon to see who has been added.

Artists can easily create their own profile entries for A:List through web forms and may update the content of their profiles at any time. The site now features a range of teaching and exhibiting artists, and we’ll soon be adding the artists from Takeover. We’ll also start to track down some of the people who exhibited with us in decades past, so look forward to learning more about the artists from some of HPAC’s most infamous shows like Hairy Who II (1967) and Marriage Chicago Style (1970).

Enjoy looking through A:List, and let us know your thoughts about it here.
