Takeover: Round Table Discussion
A varied group of artists, art administrators, and other interested individuals gathered last Thursday night for a round table discussion featuring Anthony Elms, Adelheid Mers, Dale Washington, Allison Peters, and Ray Yang. The evening centered on the question: what happens when artists take over an institution?
This question is especially relevant to the Hyde Park Art Center, which has been an artist-run institution for the vast majority of its history. But the challenges of such artist-centered spaces are often inhibiting to their long-term success, so Thursday’s group had a number of insights and suggestions to contribute to the dialogue. The general consensus seemed to be that no matter the size of an institution, it can remain a welcome space for artists by involving them in decision-making and providing opportunities for artists to build community with each other and the public. Allison concluded the evening by noting that no matter how an art center is goverened, remaining an artist-based institution is crucial for the creativity and vibrancy of the space.
