Shane Huffman's Talk

A recap by an attendee of the talk with artist Shane Huffman, about his show Wanna be a part of the Human Race?, which took place last Tuesday in 4833.

Shane Huffman was extremely generous in letting audience members into his private thoughts about the work during his informal talk. Armed with only his journal and a couple of 19th century books on flight, it is clear that this work is part of an ongoing investigation happening within his mind and body. Amazingly enough, Shane was able to adequately explain his use of white plexi frames in relation to the black and white photographs that float inside them. The short and simple hint: a big tall glass of milk…ahhh, the substance of life.

Were you there for the talk? Have something to add? Or maybe you’ve got a thought about the commentary. Share in our comments section below! Here are some more images from the discussion.

Doppelganger depicts reversed shadows of individuals, or “light bodies,” transforming the facade into a brightly populated “walk of life.” Created by the artist collaborative Luftwerk, the piece can be viewed from the inside of the gallery starting at 3pm, and on the street after 5pm. Come check out another exciting usage of the Art Center’s groundbreaking digital projection facade.

Larger than life...

Here’s the latest, most colorful addition to our building’s exterior. Passersbys on E. Hyde Park Blvd. won’t be able to miss us, and we think more than just a few people will succumb to their curiosity and will stop in to see exactly what the ART Center is all about!

Intern Outing!

Last Friday, the HPAC staff kicked up their heels and enjoyed a night out on the town with their (ahem… wonderful, smart, creative, attractive, hard-working) interns. We had a great time visiting the West Loop galleries during the biggest gallery opening night of the year. We all chatted it up with artists, gallery goers and each other, and then we headed to El Barco, a swinging Mexican seafood restaurant. The food was delicious and the conversation and drinks were flowing. What a fun way to say thanks to all of the interns and what a great benefit for interning this summer at HPAC!

Anyone else want to share their highlights from the evening?

TalkingPoint with Jeff Carter

Sculptor and Professor Jeff Carter was the speaker at our fifth TalkingPoint this past Monday, September 11th. Although not directly addressing the 9/11 anniversary, his work relates to travel, tourism, and culture, a field indelibly marked by the date. The discussion included some images of Carter’s work, followed by a lively and intimate discussion on the differences between travelers and tourists, individual accounts of travel experiences, and the question of authenticity. What is truly an authentic experience and who has the right to bestow upon an object or experience the title of being “authentic”? Please share your thoughts and tales of traveling the world!

Vera Scekic

Noticed our front lobby lately? Artist Vera Scekic provides a little color and liveliness to the space with an installation piece titled Bilateral Symmetry.

Misshapen circles and enigmatic forms expand across the gallery walls in a grid, creating tension between their exuberant colors and rigid organization. Scekic invites both close inspection of the unique shapes and a view of the work as a whole. From either perspective the installation is filled with questions both comic and unnerving: Are they a group of micro-organisms magnified onto the walls? Or do they suggest hundreds of brightly colored orifices?

Home of the Free comes down...

HPAC’s Home of the Free exhibition leaves Gallery 1, and the space is currently under deinstallation. But don’t fret, there are four other exhibitions up right now, including Scott Wolniak’s Drawing with Outer Space, Jennifer Greenberg’s Recalling Americana, Shane Huffman’s Wanna be part of the human race, and a show of Teaching Artist Linda Cohn’s students! So come on down and see these shows before time runs out. Keep an eye on our exhibition calendar for current and upcoming shows!

Here are a couple of shot of the gallery repainting going on right now.
