Our very own Director of Development, Kate Lorenz, turned a youthful and exuberant 30 today! Woohoo! Of course being the celebrity that she is, Kate had multiple parties and celebrated all weekend long leading up to today, her actual birthday. Happy 29 years and 365 days, Kate!

series A, the experimental writing series facilitated by William Allegrezza has provided the Art Center with a steady stream of literary energy to complement our visual arts activities. Well attended and high quality, it’s been a treat to serve as the host site for the program. If you haven’t been able to come by yet to check it out, please do! Here are some images from the most recent series A on Tuesday, January 23rd with readers Aaron Belz and Kristy Odelius. Our next series A features Sterling Plumpp and an accompanying musical trio and will take place on February 22nd at 7 pm.

TalkingPoint with David Schutter

The crowd at TalkingPoint!

U of C Visiting Artist and current Hyde Park Art Center studio resident David Schutter was our featured artist at TalkingPoint this past Monday. David discussed his current body of work and the process he’s gone through to accomplish it. His paintings are reproductions, done completely from memory of various paintings. He works the colors and tones to such an extent that recognizable objects become faded from view and part of a sublime and translucent surface. The discussion focused on not just his process, but also the notion of memory and the individual, and the ways that memory can become an interpretation rather than a true recounting of the facts.

Cocktails, Clay, CLTV

theaster%20talks.jpg

On Friday night, the Art Center hosted its’ third Cocktails and Clay event! Another rousing success, visitors to the Art Center were able to enjoy drinks from Bar Louie, browse the exhibitions (a last chance look at the Sun Ra shows, which are now down), and participate in some cosmic funkiness with resident master of clay, Theaster Gates. On top of that, CLTV was at the Art Center to film the event and hailed Cocktails & Clay as a fun and creative alternative to the same old friday night activities. Go to the CLTV website and click on Cocktails and Clay under the Video Playlist.

Hot Dog!

On a field trip to the Chicago History Museum a couple of months ago, the staff explored the new space’s galleries and exhibits. Of particular note were the Ed Paschke retrospective and the Chicago Dioramas. And of course we got to put in some light-hearted fun in the Children’s Gallery where they had several great interactive stations, including a ‘make your own postcard’, Chicago smells, and out favorite, ‘be a Chicago hot dog’.

Colleen’s a Vegan and Michelle is Canadian. I’m not sure why, but both those facts seem relevant to these pictures. Enjoy.

January's Art in America: Report from Chicago

AA%20logo.jpg

Check out January’s Issue of Art in America for a Report from Chicago. Heavily featured in the article is the Hyde Park Art Center’s inaugural exhibition, Takeover! The article addresses the unique opportunity available to the many cultural organizations in the city of Chicago to grow, collaborate and expand as organizations such as the Hyde Park Art Center unveil new resources, facilities, and capacities for art making, exhibition, and community building.

A PDF of the article will be up shortly, or pick up the January issue of Art in America. The Hyde Park Art Center is going places!

One more move...

SO we’ve got new floors in the hallways and the classrooms, but part of that whole equation is the fact that we had to move EVERYTHING out of the studios (ok, maybe only 90%) so that the floors could be completed. This included taking down the divider walls in our classrooms. We haven’t seen this view since the Grand Opening, so I thought it’d be fun to show just how big the classroom space really is. We also decided to do some maintenance while we were at it with the divider walls. Fun Stuff! Oh, and remember, classes start Monday! Register if you haven’t already!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! We ring in 2007 by raising the curtain on the Art Center’s brand new floors!

old%20vs%20new.jpg

During the two weeks that HPAC was clsed over the holidays, our painted concrete floors were leveled and repainted. Still sporting snazzy green in the lobby and hallways, and a cool grey (with no-skid coating) in our school and studios, they are amazing looking! The pictures don’t quite do them justice. Swing by the Art Center to see for yourself!
