Sleepy Art Center

sleep.jpg

We’re all tuckered out from a fabulous 24 hour celebration. Maybe you heard about it? Creative Move Too? Hope you made it down here. Thank you to everyone who attended, all our performers, and the many businesses, groups, volunteers, and organizations who gave off their time, donations, and energy to make it a success. More CM Too pics to come, but here are a couple shots from other recent fun at the Art Center.

Good Morning Sunshine!

sunrise.jpg

Hatha Yoga happens at 8am! Get here early to stake out a spot.

And the Gospel Brunch hits at 9am. We’re not making any promises that waffles and sausage will still be here for the latecomers.

Get yourselves down here! Creative Move Too doesn’t end for another four and a half hours and there’s still plenty of fun stuff happening today!

Middle of the night....

…and there are still lots of people here! The dance-a-thon is going strong, as is the Chess-a-thon, but the Knit-a-thon has wrapped up with a champion. The staff is starting to fade a bit, but we’re doing our best to hang in there! Still up? Stop on by the Art Center, or come on in tomorrow morning. Gospel Brunch at 9am! Yoga at 8am!

Update Two. Creative Move Too.

Ball Droppers. 1000 pots. Silk trapeze. And we’re only five hours in.
Another update later tonight. Come on down. We’re plugging on through until 12 noon tomorrow!

Where's...Juan?

Artist Juan Angel Chavez has been here at the Art Center working away, but he took a minute out of his busy schedule to have a bit of fun. So…instead of the usual “Where’s Chris?” this week, we present you with this question instead: Where’s Juan? T-shirt to the winner! and free admission to Creative Move Too (if you can tell us why this prize is funny, maybe we’ll give you two t-shirts!)

"Hula Lou" - artists' info and background

FPCicon.jpg Hula Lou (Presented as part of For Public Consumption)
Twenty dances performed to Sophie Tucker’s recording of “Hula Lou”
By Danièle Wilmouth & Morganville (Trevor Martin and Kym Olsen)

Background:
Our story begins in Chicago on April 3, 1924 when Beulah Annan shot her lover Harry Kalstedt.
For over two hours, Beulah watched Kalstedt slowly die. She drank gin and listened to a popular song called “Hula Lou” played over and over on her phonograph…

For Public Consumption Artist Discussion - FPC Curators Stephanie and Erik hash it out

FPCicon.jpg Stephanie: The FPC artist panel was all at once something very wonderful and something very silly.

We had been thinking of the panel as something where after months and months of planning this show and finally getting it going, we would celebrate our successes, watch the videos, discuss each other’s work, and finally, the BIG THEME of it all. And really, though we called it a panel, we really meant discussion. This idea was great and wonderful, and kicked off without a hitch.

Erik: Of course there were a few bugs to work out on the actual video projections yet but thanks to the telephone guidance of Chris the tech guru at HPAC we had things humming along.

Days Off, Freedom Fridays, and Cocktails and Clay

We had a crazy day at HPAC last Friday, as there was a Days off School program, we hosted Freedom Fridays, and in the evening we had our monthly installment of Cocktails and Clay. All this on top of regular classes happening at the Art Center. We recapped the blur of activity in photos below. Seems like there’s always something happening here!

There's a truck in the gallery...

…seriously. It’s all good though. Juan Angel Chavez has begun installing Speaker Project in Gallery 1 and took advantage of our handy dandy garage doors! Although it might have been cooler if he had actually just crashed into the space. Don’t tell Allison I said that though…

For Public Consumption: Curators, Sunday's Artist Discussion Topics

FPCicon.jpg Hi all,

We are having a public talk and casual chat with the For Public Consumptions artists on Sunday, 4/15 @ 2pm in the Muller Meeting Room in 4833 at HPAC.

Everyone is welcome. Think of it as a jam session with FPC artists, curators, and anyone who wants to join in the fray.

During the discussion, we will engage ideas and questions raised by the FPC exhibition about the HPAC facade, and how it functions in the local community. The perspectives of audience, artists, and curators will all play an important role in this talk.

This will be the kind of good time that people, people who like to talk about art and art institutions, can really sink their teeth into.

To get our thoughts going, here are a few of the questions we have been kicking around with the artists and hope include:

For Public Consumption: Curators, Day 1

LogoForBlog.jpg Welcome to the first official post of the For Public Consumption. This blog is designed to be something like a gallery guide, something like an artist statement or curatorial essay, and something like a multi-media artwork. Each week the blog will be hosted by a different FPC artist, curator, and maybe some surprise guests.

This week the blog will be hosted the FPC curators, Erik Fabian and Stephanie Pereira. From April 11- 21 we will introduce you to the show, the artists, and some our process of getting the show up and running. We will also post a response to our artist panel this coming Sunday, April 15th from 2-4pm.

Today’s post is a description of the genesis of For Public Consumption, and some thoughts on how each piece connects to HPAC, Links Hall, and you.

Spring Break Camp Redux

A recap of a crazy spring break camp week here at the Hyde Park Art Center. Two camp groups took over the studios last week, participating in a range of activities from drawing and painting to performance and sculpture. Teachinig Artists Suzanne, Sarah, Kelly, and William led the rowdy bunch through explorations of the art center, exhibits, and much more while making some pretty cool work at the same time. But we’ll let the pictures tell the story. Hope everyone enjoyed their camp time! And thank you to our Teaching Artists! They were great!

Cool Events and Blogging Press!

bomb.jpg

Some cool events happening at the Hyde Park Art Center and a great review of the space!

First up, a group examination and discussion of Daniel Burnham’s 1909 plan of Chicago. This group meets each Wednesday from 6:30pm-8pm here in 4833 rph and if you’re interested, check out this entry on Architecture Chicago PLUS for people to contact.

Second, if you’ve been by recently, you’ve no doubt wondered about the rainbow mushroom cloud in our lobby. It’s all part of the Adventurous Type, an exhibition that opened recently and is curated by our very own Allison Peters. Stop in to be mesmerized by the works of Christian Kuras and Duncan MacKenzie, Sarah Anne Johnson, Paul Lloyd Sargent, and Deb Sokolow.

Finally, check out this review by a Blogger on NBC’s Street Team. We like to think we’re fun and welcoming here and have some cool stuff (classes and exhibitions) for everyone. In fact, if you’re looking for cool stuff to do, spring classes have just begun! It’s not too late to register! And keep your eye out for Creative Move TOO, the Art Center’s One Year Anniversary and 24 hour extravaganza!

Spring Break Camps

CPS Spring Break Camps are on at the Hyde Park Art Center this week! With two camp sessions (separated by age) and some great camp teachers, the kids are gearing up for some very cool performances at the end of the week. Check out these images from our works in progress, and if you want to see the final product, come for our performances at the end of the week on Friday.

Opening Day!

The second best kind of Opening Day (the first of course being an exhibition opening) is for Baseball! It all started last night when the Mets topped the St Louis Cardinals (Go Mets!) and today the rest of league starts up. Unfortunately the Cubs are picking up where they left off last season, already down 5-1 to the Cincinnati Reds, and the White Sox aren’t faring much better, losing 11-3 to Cleveland. Is it too soon to start thinking about next season?

Go Baseball!
