Celebrate the 15th Annual SOFA CHICAGO (Sculpture Objects and Functional Art Fair) with VIP access to this international art fair held Nov. 7-9 at Navy Pier's Festival Hall.
The Stockyard Institute’sPedagogical Factory is fully operational and churning out programming and new ideas faster than you can say…Pedagogical Factory!
How DO you remember?
Every wednesday evening and saturday afternoon stop in and take part in one of the Factory’s programs. Check out the whole schedule here. We’ve already had fantastic turnouts for “How We Remember with the Chicago Underground Library” and “How We Learn: Building an Educated City”. Recaps are on Jim Duignan’s blog at http://jimduignan.blogspot.com .
Miss Comfort, aka Jessi T Walsh, has gone all technological and stuff with her performance of “As Deep As She is Tall: A Peepshow in 3 Acts” now available on the web. Check out part one of the performance below, and head on over to the Hyde Park Art Center Youtube page for the remainder, as well as some cool videos from our Sun Ra Symposium last year.
Every inch of the two levels of 5020 S. Cornell has been used as exhibition space during the Art Center’s first year of operation in its new space, so why not extend ourselves a little further and use the roof while we’re at it!
On Tuesday, July 24th the HPAC team rallied themselves and spent the day in a luxury suite at US Cellular Field. We felt that there couldn’t be a better way to kick-off the commencement of our Fall 2008 benefit, Not Just Another Pretty Face, than to eat hot dogs, drink a beer, and mingle with local artists and patrons. If I may say so, we were not wrong. The Chicago White Sox won against the Detroit Tigers, and now our year long endeavor is in full swing.
He’s definitely in the Art Center, but where could this swanky den of love that our very own Chris Hammes is reclining in be located? If you know, you could win an Art Center T-Shirt!
HPAC’s Creative Events Committee (the group that brings you Creative Move, Cocktails & Clay, Fun For All, and more) is branching out…to Michigan! Only a short car ride away, and full of Chicagoans and art lovers, the towns of Three Oaks, Union Pier, Lakeside, and Sawyer are perfect places to engage the artistic community. We spent the day there in early July to get a feel for the area and make some plans…
In its continuing march towards becoming an internationally recognized venue for cutting edge contemporary art, the Hyde Park Art Center conquers yet another small and prospering nation. This time, our Executive Director, Chuck Thurow touched down in Albania for several days and spread some Art Center goodwill in the form of t-shirts. Get yours today by becoming a member of the Art Center!
Christina Jensen is our new Development Associate and today is her first day! Here she is, jumping straight into the fire and getting familiar with our database, eTapestry.
If you see her in the halls, say hello. Welcome aboard, Christina. We hope you like it here!
Farewell, Speaker Project! Watching Juan’s sculpture be disassembled and carried out through the big garage doors this week has been bittersweet. …I think we’re all sorry to see it go. (Juan, if the offer still stands to let me reassemble it in my bedroom, I’m in!). Although there have been many highlights from the show, starting with an over-enthusiastic fan throwing up ON the sculpture opening night, to an amazing performance by the Kenwood Academy Jazz Ensemble, to mysterious performance sounds making their way all the way up to the Upstairs Office throughout the workday, Juan’s TalkingPoint a few weeks ago was a particular favorite.
The Reykjavik Academy in Iceland hosted a one-day international seminar on the topic of provincialism in contemporary art and culture in June 2007. Thanks to a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, I was able to participate in the discussion and meet the artists who call themselves The Provincialists: Astri Luihn (Faro Islands), Ane Lahn (Norway), Madeleine Park (Norway), Thordís Alda Sigurdardóttir (Iceland). An exhibition of the Provincialists’ work was held in conjunction with the seminar at The Art Museum of Kópavogur, Iceland.
Camp Session Two rolls along. Trips to the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago History Museum, and rehearsals for some fabulous performances tomorrow afternoon have kept everyone busy! Got some spare time tomorrow afternoon at 2pm? Swing by the Art Center and prepare to be wowed by our campers!
Last week the Art Center celebrated the birthday of one Allison Peters, and bid a sad farewell to Bruce Phillips, our visiting New Zealander. In true HPAC fashion, the occasion was celebrated with some awesome cake!
Additionally, check out these shots from our last TalkingPoint with Juan Angel Chavez and Patheogeographies with Dan Wang. Tons of stuff happening here at the Art Center. And don’t forget that this is the last weekend to see Speaker Project at the Art Center. Come see it before it’s gone!
