Dragon Makes Art?!

Dragon%20and%20Dad.jpg

With Halloween just around the corner, this morning the preschoolers could not be found! A dragon (taking the day off from spitting flames) and a princess were just some of the new students in their place. They spent the morning working hard to make paper pumpkins!

When disaster strikes...

Two really great organizations are currently recovering from very sad and unfortunate circumstances. On September 19th, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago suffered a fire which has closed down the entire building. A great cultural gem which was thriving on the support of volunteers and generous patrons, this is a major setback, but hopefully one that they can overcome. If you’d like to support them in their rebuilding efforts, head on over to their website: http://www.ccamuseum.org/

Another organization whose facility recently suffered a fire is Street-Level Youth Media. Their neutral ground site suffered a fire on October 12th, and although the facilities were destroyed, luckily no one was hurt. The group is still sorting out the recovery plan, but we wish them the best. As we hear more, we’ll share the news, and hopefully they will be able to land on their feet as well.

Good luck to both organizations! They are both great places staffed with hard-working people, and at a time like this, we need to reach out and help those who get knocked down get back up so that they can continue their work.

Speaker Project in Boston: Mike Teevee live and in stereo

Remember Mike TeeVee from the Willy Wonka movie? And of course I’m talking about the original movie with Gene Wilder. Not the creeptastic Tim Burton creation with the dancing squirrels.

Not to over analyze what is a completely entertaining movie, but Mike TeeVee’s character does present some interesting ideas. For instance: Wonkavision. Mike gets broken into tiny particles, transmitted through the air and ends up inside a television set.

It makes you think. As human beings we are conditioned to be curious, particularly about how things work and why. But how does seeing the machine from the inside change our understanding and experience? Essentially, what’s it like to watch television from the inside?

Juan Angel Chàvez explores this same concept in his exhibition The Speaker Project. The exhibition originally appeared here at the Art Center in 2006. It recently traveled to Boston where it has met rave reviews.
