Field Trip 2

Artist Residency

Formally launching this Fall, Hyde Park Art Center's Residency program brings artists from around the world to live and work in Chicago. Through these residencies, we aim to:

  • Stimulate Chicago’s cultural community by infusing a range of artists and cultural producers into the city who are encouraged to engage with the community;
  • Support the process of creating new work at all stages from research to making;
  • Demystify professional art practices by actively inviting a diverse public to participate in Residency programs and engage with working artists;
  • Investigate the role of art making, practice, and presentation within a dynamic, urban environment;
  • Expand the dialogue between Chicago and the rest of the world through exhibition, cross-cultural exchange, and conversation surrounding international contemporary art practices.

Artists are provided studio space at the Art Center, accommodation, supportive resources, and connection to Chicago artists, institutions, and cultural communities. Residency projects may also include an opportunity to exhibit at the Art Center.

The Residency program seeks to support artists in the process of creativity and research by providing space to experiment, networking opportunities, and a platform to expand their practice. The program recognizes that art production is a process that requires study, experimentation, and is often enhanced by connections to other creative individuals and organizations. To this end, we match resident artists with a rich variety of Chicago resources relevant to their practice, and conversely, we aim to cultivate and nurture relationships with institutions and cultural organizations based outside the country to increase opportunities for local artists.

Artist selection will be made through a combination of invitation and a forthcoming open application. It will be based on the proven quality of artists' work and the impact this residency will have on their practice. International and national residencies range from one to four months, while local artists may be in residence for up to a year, depending on the artist’s needs and project scope. Current resident artists are by invitation-only as we lead up to our Fall 2012 launch date for the formal program.
