Urban Space - HPAC's Artist Residency program

Coming Soon! Urban Space - HPAC’s Artist Residency program

The Hyde Park Art Center will create an artist residency program called Urban Space, to be jointly administered by the Art Center and the University of Chicago’s Division of the Humanities. The proposed program is planned to begin in the fall of 2007 in the Art Center’s new 32,000 sq. ft. facility, and will become a key component of our expanded programs and exhibitions by having three working artists in the building interact directly with our diverse audiences.

this residency will allow artists to have opportunities to create, interpret, present, and perform artistic work, in whatever form it may take

By housing a residency program, the Art Center’s goals are to provide local, national, and international artists with a space to create work and become a part of the unique collaborative and creative environment of the Art Center. Specifically, this residency will allow artists to have opportunities to create, interpret, present, and perform artistic work, in whatever form it may take, in a studio located in a major urban center that provides a unique mix of contemporary and traditional cultures, of ethnic communities of high and low, and of intellectual innovation in the realms of technology, commerce, performance, the media, and urban planning.

Additionally, the Art Center hopes that Urban Space will, in turn, strengthen, enrich and build the arts community of Chicago by bringing in great artists to work and live in Chicago. They will provide a fresh perspective and their expertise to other artists, teachers, and students in the city

In addition to the three artist studios that will serve our program, HPAC and the University have included four additional artist studios just down the hall. These four studios will be used on an ongoing basis by University of Chicago Department of Visual Arts faculty, further increasing the quantity and level of intellectual and artistic interchange that will characterize our program. In addition, the selection of artists will not be limited to visual artists, but will include writers, curators, art historians, etc.; the Art Center believes that these individuals are a vital part of the creative community and can benefit from our support.

Stay tuned for more information.
