Full-Time Job Opportunities:

JOB TITLE: Installation Technician

SUPERVISOR’S TITLE: Director of Exhibitions

General Summary: The Hyde Park Art Center is looking for an enthusiastic, hard-working, thorough, organized, and skilled individual to join our close-knit team as a full time Installation Technician.

The Art Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing contemporary visual art in Chicago by connecting artists and communities in unexpected ways. As an open forum for exploring the artistic process, the Art Center fosters creativity through making, learning about, seeing, and discussing art—all under one roof.

The Art Center’s Exhibitions program is an incubator for artists looking to push the boundaries of their practice and whose work makes meaningful contributions to today’s social and political discourse. By enabling underrepresented artists to be entrepreneurial in their work and giving them the broad exposure they deserve, the Art Center ensures that groundbreaking contemporary art gets made—and seen—in Chicago.

With a small staff of ten full time employees, the Art Center relies on passionate, talented, motivated individuals who can take the initiative in managing their individual roles while also seamlessly integrating into the collective work experience. Our staff and office culture reflects our mission in that we are diverse, dynamic, and collaborative. We often work as a full team on projects, programs, events, and initiatives.

The Installation Technician is a crucial player within this mix. As part of the Exhibitions team, the Installation Technician manages the general preparation of the Art Center’s exhibitions program, which spans seven gallery spaces, including an 80-foot digital gallery located on the building’s façade. This position is involved in the exhibitions process from planning to execution: from managing relationships with artists; to coordinating administrative aspects of mounting a show, like disseminating loan forms and shipping artwork; to ensuring that all exhibitions are polished, properly lit, and professionally presented. The Installation Tech works closely with all exhibiting artists and artists-in-residence, as well as interns and volunteers, to support the realization of new artwork in all media.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Manage all art handling, exhibition installation, and construction for 15-20 exhibitions annually
• Repair and maintain audio visual equipment
• Lead installations on some weekends and evenings for openings and other events
• Coordinate exhibitions from the planning process and delivery to mounting and presentation
• Work closely with artists in realizing large-scale installations and technological work
• Oversee and instruct interns to assist in exhibition installation and maintenance tasks
• Move effortlessly between hands-on construction work and administration
• Maintain and manage all gallery spaces, including lighting and cleanliness down to the little details

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Proficiency with power tools; general construction and handyman skills required
• Confidence in troubleshooting technological devices, and software programming including both PC and Mac computers
• Excellent organizational skills
• Proven knowledge of best practices for art handling
• Candidate must be able to lift 100 lbs
• Must be detail-oriented, organized, reliable, and possess good communication skills
• Basic administrative skills required
