Ani Afshar

Jewelry collections available through international and local retailers including Victoria & Albert Museum, Harrod’s and Fenwick’s, Bloomingdale’s, Barney’s, Henry Bendel, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Ave, and Anthropology. Afshar opened her own Lincoln Park boutique in 2000. Teaching experience throughout Southeast Asia and workshops and seminars through her jewelry studio.

This term Ani will be teaching Jewelry:Beads & Strings and Jewelry:Beads & Wires.

Sara Black

MFA, University of Chicago, BA in Environmental Studies, Evergreen State College; BFA University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Teaching experience includes University of Chicago, Gary Comer Youth Center, Northwestern University, IIT, and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Recent exhibitions include University of Illinois Gallery 400, Experimental Station, Columbia College A+D Gallery, Betty Rymer Gallery, MCA, U of C Midway Studios, and Smart Museum.

Tim Branson

MFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; BFA in Painting, Rhode Island School of Design. Former Peace Corps volunteer who served in West Africa illustrating educational materials. Spent six months living in Guatemala taking a Spanish language course while creating pastels and prints that depict aspects of the culture and landscape there. Has exhibited both locally and nationally. Work is included in the Chicago Public Library permanent collection.

This term, Tim will be teaching Painting in Oils and Drawing:Color, Line, Shape & Form

MFA, University of Chicago Midway Studios; BFA, Kansas City Art Institute. Teaching experience includes Evanston Art Center, University of Chicago, and College of DuPage. Most recent local exhibits include CCT Gallery, Chicago, MPAC Gallery, Joliet, and Chicago’s Open Studio Program Residency.

This term, Dawn will be teaching Perception Through the Graphite Pencil, Oil: One Figure, Oil Painting: The Direct Approach and Formula and Spontaneity in Watercolor

Brennen

Erin Burk

BA, art education and ceramics, Bethany College. Teaching experience at Northern Colorado Pottery Guild, Carnegie Arts Center of Goodland, and elementary and middle schools in Colorado. Burk was the recipient of the “Heros Among Us” Award in 2004. Her artistic skill ranges from ceramics and sculpture, to photography, painting and drawing, and more. Exhibited with the Messiah Art Exhibition in which she won Merit Awards for her work.

This term Erin will be teaching Teapots Galore!, Wine and Cheese and Throw Some Clay.

Holly Cahill

Received the Meta Wolfstein Travel Fellowship to Japan in order to research topics of aesthetics in relation to her studio practice. Teaching experience at the college level includes courses in basic drawing, figure drawing, 2-D and 3-D design. Has taught adult and children’s courses within art centers for the past several years. In the Greater Cincinnati Area, has shown at Gallery Salveo, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Northern Kentucky University, and the 840 Gallery and DAAP galleries of the University of Cincinnati. Exhibition experience in Chicago includes group shows at the Mars Gallery, Fulton Street Collective, and Hyde Park Art Center.

This term Holly will be teaching Preschool: Discover Art.

Painting faculty at Savannah College of Art and Design for 4 years. Numerous solo exhibitions and over 50 group exhibitions at venues including The American University of Cairo, The Art Institute of Chicago, Pratt Graphics Center, Rockford Art Museum and the Evanswille Museum of Arts and Science. Received the SCAD presidential fellowship in 2002.

This term Linda will be teaching Beginning Drawing and Portrait & Figure Drawing.


Ollie Dantzler

Recipient of photography awards and scholarships from Calumet Photo, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Hyde Park Art Center. Recent exhibitions include the Chicago Public Library (South Shore Branch), Hot House Chicago, Salisbury University Gallery (MD), and the Hyde Park Art Center.

This term, Ollie will be teaching Level I Photography, Level II Photography and Crochet.


Melanie Dorson

MFA, University of Michigan; BA in Studio Art, Carleton College. Teaching experience includes the University of Michigan and the College of DuPage and the University of Chicago Lab School. Regionally exhibited work includes photolithos, etchings, woodblock prints, silkscreens, photo and slide transfers, handmade books, and weavings.

Adam Ekberg

MFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; BA, Wheaton College. Eckberg has extensive teaching experience as a college level educator, exhibiting artist, and curator. Eckberg recently exhibited with the Contemporary Art Workshop in a solo exhibition, and has also exhibited with Fifty/50 Gallery, Gallery 2, the Renaissance Society Benefit, Independent Project Space, the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation, The Portland Museum of Art, Loyola University Museum of Art, and Thomas Robertello Gallery.

This term Adam will be teaching Digital Photography I and Digital Photography II.

William Estrada

BFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; holds a Special 10 K-12 Certification from the State of Illinois. Has worked with grass-roots organziations for the past 8 years, and continues to participate in varoius community projects in the Chicago area. Works as an artist-in-residence at Telpochcalli Elementary School through C.A.P.E. and various community schools through HPAC, Pros Arts Studios and A.R.T.

MFA, SAIC; BA, Yale University, Architecture. Additional course work at International Center of Photography. Teaching experience includes School of the Art Institute of Chicago, International Center of Photography. Recent exhibitions include Jewish Federation of Santa Barbara, G2 Gallery, Rosenberg Gallery (NYC), Gallery 400, MCA, Project Space Gallery.

Daniel Godston

MFA, Mills College. Teaching experience includes The Poetry Center of Chicago, The Center of Community Art Partnerships and Columbia College Chicago. Also composes music and plays trumpet and other instruments with The Ways & Means Trio and other jazz groups in Chicago.


Ada Rima Grybauskas

Shannon Kerrigan

ske_1.jpg BFA, The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Professional experience ranges from maintaining a welding shop to producing hand made paper invitations in her studio. Shannon has worked for some of Chicago’s preeminent Arts Organizations including; Artsbridge, ARC Gallery, Chicago Public Art and Redmoon Theatre. A decade of teaching experience includes: Gallery 37, A.R.T., The Chicago Park District and Lill Street. Since joining the Hyde Park Art Center in 2000 Shannon has been an artist in residence in over a dozen schools in a variety of programs. Currently the Curriculum Developer and Lead Artist at the University of Chicago Charter High School Woodlawn Campus. Last year Shannon completed two commissions for private collectors and her metal work was included in shows at HPAC and The Chicago Art Source.

BA in English with Honors in Art, Writing Certificate, Pennsylvania State University. Completing a degree in Interior Design at Harrington College of Design. Experience includes the Goodman Theatre (costume shop stitcher), International House of Blues (visiting artist), Chicago Cultural Center (adult quilting instructor), and various community sites.

Debbie Lekousis

BFA, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Teaching experience includes Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School (preschool though 6th grade art) for 9 years, Hyde Park Art Center. Workshops include Field Museum Holiday Tea, Osaka Garden, Chicago Botanic Garden, Chicago Children’s Museum. Educators’ workshops include Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Public Library, and Chicago Public Schools. Exhibitions include Chicago Children’s Museum, The Japanese Consulate (Chicago), The Fashion Institute of Technology (NY), BareWalls 2003, 2004, and 2005 (SAIC).

Jessica Lowery

BA in Sculpture, Loyola University Chicago; BAE, Harron School of Art and Design. Taught children’s mixed-media and ceramics classes and camps at the Indianapolis Art Center for nealry 12 years. Taught adult collage at the IAC for 2 years. Directed the Fine Arts Day camp for the IAC for 3 years. Has been involved in Artreach programs.

BA in Liberal Arts; Film, Animation & Sculpture Focus. Associate Artistic Director of Redmoon Theater where he has served as an award winning director, designer, and performer for over 10 years. Founding member of Theater DANK. Teaching experience includes Columbia College Chicago, Gallery 37, Project LEAP, AIC, Northwestern University, UIC Illinois, and the University of Chicago.


Helen McElroy

MFA, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago; BFA, New York School of Ceramics and Art; BA, Alfred University, New York. Teaching experience at SAIC, Evanston Art Center, Moraine Valley Community College and in Japan. Has received an education research grant while abroad and has exhibited both domestically and in Japan.

Justine Nagan

MA, University of Chicago; BA, University of Wisconsin at Madison. Creating tote bags and quilts for 6 years. Tote bags have been featured at the Smart Museum of Art, the K-fleye fashion show, and on Wisconsin Public Television, as well as over the shoulders of very stylish family members and friends. Currently working in documentary production at Kartemquin Films.


BFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Currently pursuing MAT degree and Elementary Certification at National Louis University in Evanston. Has taught ceramics to children in Oxford, Maine. Drawing instructor for the past three years for an afterschool program in city and suburban elementary schools.


Kean Sea Park

Studied under his father, one of the top six Oriental artists in Korea. Teaching experience includes the YMCA, University of Chicago, various church groups, and private individual instruction throughout Chicago for over 25 years. Has exhibited throughout Asia and the Chicagoland area. Four-time winner of the Korean National Art Competition.

This term, Kean will be teaching Asian Ink Painting.

Meg Peterson

BA in fine arts from the University of Oregon. Teaching experience includes Columbia College, Chicago, Prairie Mountain School, Fairfield Elementary and Kelly Middle School via City of Eugene Parks and Recreation Department. Peterson has also served as a volunteer teacher in Accra, Ghana through Global Volunteer Network and as an Art Coordinator and Workshop Leader for Hollistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability.


Mark Phillips

Attended East Carolina School of Art. Teaching experience includes Studio 935, Fibre Craft Materials Corp. Exhibition experience includes Chicago Cultural Center, Hot House Performance Center, and the Evanston Art Center.

This term Mark will be teaching Teen Silkscreen.


Anna Ressman

B.A. Great Books of Western Society, St. John’s College Santa Fe. An artist who specializes in the visual mediums of photography, soft sculpture, installation, and graphic design, Ressman combines these tools with music and academics as well as creative writing to create multimedia experiences that are dynamic and educational. Also studied professional voice, music theory, and composition for over twenty years. Ressman’s main subjects of investigation include the phenomenology of the creative process, the psychology and neurology of memory, and social migration patterns both voluntary and compulsory. Exhibitions include Grass Roots Art in Chicago as well as in Pittsburgh and online. Ressman has been published in national print and online magazines, and received an award from The Baltimore Sun for her creative writing.

This term Anna will be teaching Professional Writing for Artists and Photo Seminar and Critique.

Valerie Richards

Experience includes 40 years of teaching graphics and painting at area colleges, art centers, and in numerous senior community and school-based programs. Exhibitions include over 10 years at the Hyde Park Art Center, many printmaking and mural commissions, and numerous collections exhibitions.

This term, Valerie will be teaching Formula and Spontaneity in Watercolor.



Kelly Rider

More than 10 years teaching experience in New Mexico and Illinois. In Chicago, teaching experience includes K-8th at CPS and many classes at HPAC. Most recently her handmade paper pieces and book arts have been exhibited locally in the 4th International Book and Paper Arts Triennial at Columbia College’s Chicago Center for Book & Paper Arts, the Chicago Public Library’s Books! Chicago Bound and Bedecked show, and Vespine Gallery in Pilsen.


Darrell Roberts

MFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; BFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; BA in Art History, University of Northern Iowa. Teaching experience includes School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Hearst Center for the Arts, Marwen, Lill Street Art Center, and Illinois Institute of Art. Exhibits paintings locally.

Hardy Schlick

MFA, University of Chicago, studied with Ruth Duckworth and Hiroake Morino. Teaching experience includes adult and children’s ceramic classes at the Hyde Park Art Center for over 25 years, the South Side Arts Partnership, the Bridgeport Partnership, and the Hyde Park Art Center’s community outreach programs.

This term, Hardy will be teaching Multi-Level Ceramics (Adults) and Ceramics (Children).

Schreiner has experience teaching silkscreen and working with Artists-in-Residence at The Fabric Workshop & Museum in Philadelphia, PA from 1999-2004 and taught painting at Northwestern University. Schreiner has exhibited her paintings at various venues nationally and locally at the Union Arts League, Rowland Contemporary Gallery and the Contemporary Art Workshop.

BFA in painting, Philadelphia College of Art. Apprenticeships in felting and silkscreen in Berlin. Teaching experience includes drawing and painting at Japanese/American Cultural Institute in Lisbon, silkscreen at Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin. She also taught English to adults and children in Europe for over 13 years. She has exhibited locally and internationally. Recent work focuses on silkscreen and drawn and clay animation.

This term Laura will be teaching Making Things and Outdoor Art.

Mark Siska

BA, Columbia College, concentration in documentary filmmaking and video installation. Independent producer and filmmaker both in Chicago and internationally. Founder and executive director of Euro Undereground. Teaching experience includes A.R.T., Catherine Cook School, the Cook County Office of the Public Guardian, and the Evanston Art Center. Exhibitions include local and international film festivals.

This term Mark will be teaching Digital Video, Digital Mix Up (Youth) and Digital Mix Up (Adult).

Martin Soto

BFA, SAIC; Graduate studies at Hunter College and New York University. Teaching experience includes Chicago Public Schools Office of Language and Cultural Education, Zhou B. Center, Martin Soto Studio, Chicago Public Art Group, and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

Mary presently works in her expanded studio, Dripping Water, creating unique custom useable objects, including interior mosaics, handmade papers, books and prints; exhibitions have included the Hyde Park Art Center, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, and Crane Paper Institute.

This term, Mary will be teaching Teen Drawing and Ceramic Tiles.

David Trost

BFA, Penn State University; MFA, SAIC. A studio artist who works primarily in clay, Trost teaches at Lillstreet Art Center, Evanston Art Center, Harold Washington College, and SAIC. Solo and group exhibitions include Terra Incognito, Chicago Cultural Center, Gross Park Sculpture Invitational, Lillstreet Art Center, and Harold Washington College.


Ben Turcotte

Worked with architectural stained glass for seven years in a number studios, including Bauhaus Apprenticeship Institute, WIll Hamm Stained Glass, Altamira Art Glass, Turcotte Art Glass, Discovery, Chaos Art Glass, Discovery Center, Two Fish Art Glass. Art Glass on display in galleries around the country and experience restoring antique windows for a historic monument.

This term, Ben will be teaching Stained Glass.


Shoshanna Utchenik

BFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Has served as Artistic Associate, Redmoon Theater, Chicago. Performances include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Steppenwolf Studio Theater, and Theater Oobleck. Teaching experience includes School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia College. Awards include the Community Arts Assistance Program Grant (2002) and the John Quincy Adams Fellowship (2000).

This term Shoshanna will be teaching Wood Carved Puppets and Finger Puppet Extravaganza.

Omar Vera

MFA, SAIC; BFA, Ceramics, BA, Art History, University of Washington. Teaching experience at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Lillstreet Art Center and Olive Harvey Community College. Current exhibitions include Lillstreet Art Center, Gallery 312, Schopf Gallery on Lake, Gene Siskel Film Center, Modest Contemporary Arts, Gallery 2 and Base Space AIC.


Vera Videnovich

Attended the Art Insitute of Chicago. Trained as knitting instructor thorugh Craft Yarn Council. Was taught to knit by her father at age 7, became part of a long line of knitters and weavers in her family. Produces line of clothing using wool sheared from her own sheep, which she hand-spins and dyes using natural materials. Has led knitting groups throughout Chicago.

This term Vera will be teaching Knitting and Textile Manipulation.

Jessi T. Walsh

MA candidate in Interdisciplanary Arts at Columbia College Chicago; BFA in Studio Art, Florida State University. Professional experience includes Hyde Park Art Center, CAPE, Redmoon, Illinois Arts Alliance, community gardening with architreasures, and theatrical set design with Big Works. Group and solo exhibitions in Chicago, Florida, Texas and Washington include works in metal, rubber, mixed media and photographic installation. Recent performance art and movement exhibitions have been held at Chicago Moving Company’s studio in Hamlin Park.

This term Jessi will be teaching Experimental Performance and Youth Knitting.

Dale Washington

BA, Columbia College. Also attended Columbus College of Art and Design and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Recipient of the 2003 Artist of the Year Award from the Southside Community Art Center. Recent exhibitions include Gruen Gallery, the South Shore Cultural Center, the Southside Community Art Center and Miijiza’s Gallery. Featured artist in Chicago collector Daniel Parker’s new book “African Art: The Diaspora and Beyond.”

This term, Dale will be teaching Still Life and Abstract.

Ivan Watkins

PhD candidate, University of New Orleans; Ma, University of Chicago; BFA, SAIC. Teaching experience locally and nationally include Northeastern Illinois University, Tarrant County College, Capoeira Angola, and North Lawndale Learning Center. Ivan has been involved in several public art projects in Chicago, New Orleans, and Bridgeport. Group and solo exhibitions include Around the Coyote, Minneapolis Indian Center, and Robin Brisker Gallery.


Mark Werle

Photographer and digital artist, Mark Werle has worked as a computer tech at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for the last eight years. He works and volunteers at a number of art non-profits in the Chicago area which have included Video Machete, Insight Arts, Women in the Director Chair and the Evanston Art Center.


Julian Williams

MFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; BFA, SAIC. Teaching experience in drawing and painting includes Hyde Park Art Center, Evanston Art Center, Columbia College Chicago, Boulevard Arts Center, ad CPS. Recent exhibition experience includes Open Door Gallery, South Side Community Art Center, Susan Woodson Gallery, and ETA Creative Arts Foundation Gallery.

Justin Witte

MFA University of Illinois Chicago; BFA, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design; New York Studio Program. Teaching Experience includes Harold Washington College, Northwestern University, and University of Illinois at Chicago. Exhibition experience includes Gallery 400, Vega Estates, Vox Populi (Philadelphia), Space 1026 (Philadelphia) and the D.U.M.B.O. Art Center (New York City).

This term Justin will be teaching Beginning Painting.

Rebecca Zemans

BFA, AB, University of Michigan; Studied at HPAC as a child. Teaching experience includes The Crucible, The Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, and the Ann Arbor Art Center. Recent exhibitions include the Oakland International Airport, ArtworkSF and the Oakland Museum of California.
