Ani Afshar

Jewelry collections available through international and local retailers including Victoria & Albert Museum, Harrod’s and Fenwick’s, Bloomingdale’s, Barney’s, Henry Bendel, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Ave, and Anthropology. Afshar opened her own Lincoln Park boutique in 2000. Teaching experience throughout Southeast Asia and workshops and seminars through her jewelry studio.

Alison Balcanoff

Jewelry Designer and background in a variety of visual media, from drawing and painting to printmaking and sculpture. Alison has work in collections at the Suffolk University Library as well as with the Hartford Academy of the Arts. Currently she is an actively involved member of Happenstance Jewelry in addition to the Hyde Park Art Center teaching artists staff.

Alice Baum

MFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Has taught at the Hyde Park Art Center for over 40 years. Exhibitions include Artemisia Gallery, the Hyde Park Art Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and others.


Bradley Biancardi

Received MFA from University of Washington, focused in painting and drawing, and also completed coursework at Indiana University, earning a BFA in painting/drawing. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at Eastern Expansion and Artist-Run Gallery, as well as group shows at ZhouB Art Center and Co-Prosperity Sphere. Professionally, Bradley has been teaching for over 5 years.


Michelle Bolinger

Michelle received a MFA from the University of Washington in Painting and a BFA from Indiana University. She has exhibited nationally, including a solo exhibitions at Francine Seders Gallery in Seattle, WA and at Harold Washington College in Chicago, IL.

This term Michelle will be teaching Oil Painting.

Tim Branson

MFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; BFA in Painting, Rhode Island School of Design. Former Peace Corps volunteer who served in West Africa illustrating educational materials. Spent six months living in Guatemala taking a Spanish language course while creating pastels and prints that depict aspects of the culture and landscape there. Has exhibited both locally and nationally. Work is included in the Chicago Public Library permanent collection.

This term Tim will be teaching Expressive Portraits (Youth).

Dawn Brennan

MFA, University of Chicago Midway Studios; BFA, Kansas City Art Institute. Teaching experience includes Evanston Art Center, University of Chicago, and College of DuPage. Most recent local exhibits include CCT Gallery, Chicago, MPAC Gallery, Joliet, and Chicago’s Open Studio Program Residency.

Brennan

Erin Burk

BA, art education and ceramics, Bethany College. Teaching experience at Northern Colorado Pottery Guild, Carnegie Arts Center of Goodland, and elementary and middle schools in Colorado. Burk was the recipient of the “Heros Among Us” Award in 2004. Her artistic skill ranges from ceramics and sculpture, to photography, painting and drawing, and more. Exhibited with the Messiah Art Exhibition in which she won Merit Awards for her work.


Stephanie Burke

Received her BFA from Humbolt State University and a MFA at the School of the Art Institute for Photography. She won 3rd place in the BAC Digital Photography Competition. Stephanie has experience as an instructor not only at HPAC, but also as a TA at SAIC.

Marty Burns

Awarded the 2009 Illinois Arts Council Award. Received MFA and BFA from the School at the Art Institute of Chicago, with a concentration in Material Studies. In addition to teaching at HPAC, Marty has served as a teaching Assistant and as an educator in various capacities throughout her career. She has recently exhibited at the Robert Wayner Gallery as the Flat Iron Building SmART show.

This term Marty will be teaching: Ahoy Matey: The Art of the Sailor! and Intro to Fibers & Textiles and Surface Studies.

Holly Cahill

Received the Meta Wolfstein Travel Fellowship to Japan in order to research topics of aesthetics in relation to her studio practice. Teaching experience at the college level includes courses in basic drawing, figure drawing, 2-D and 3-D design. Has taught adult and children’s courses within art centers for the past several years. In the Greater Cincinnati Area, has shown at Gallery Salveo, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Northern Kentucky University, and the 840 Gallery and DAAP galleries of the University of Cincinnati. Exhibition experience in Chicago includes group shows at the Mars Gallery, Fulton Street Collective, and Hyde Park Art Center.

BFA, MA, Bradley University, MFA, SAIC. Archaeological draftsman for the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago for 3 years. Painting faculty at Savannah College of Art and Design for 4 years. Numerous solo exhibitions and over 50 group exhibitions at venues including The American University of Cairo, The Art Institute of Chicago, Pratt Graphics Center, Rockford Art Museum and the Evanswille Museum of Arts and Science. Received the SCAD presidential fellowship in 2002.


Carrie Cooper

Carrie can most often be seen holding down the front desk. She started at the Art Center as a volunteer and became a part of the full-time staff in 2010. Carrie holds a BFA from Indiana University’s Herron School of Art & Design. She has taught photography to youth and adults at the Herron’s Saturday School visual arts education program and at the University of New Mexico. Carrie also co-owns a local coffee shop in Ukrainian Village that exhibits emerging Chicago artists.

This term Carrie will be teaching Intro to Digital Photo and Landscape Photography.


Ollie Dantzler

Recipient of photography awards and scholarships from Calumet Photo, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Hyde Park Art Center. Recent exhibitions include the Chicago Public Library (South Shore Branch), Hot House Chicago, Salisbury University Gallery (MD), and the Hyde Park Art Center.


Melanie Dorson

MFA, University of Michigan; BA in Studio Art, Carleton College. Teaching experience includes the University of Michigan and the College of DuPage and the University of Chicago Lab School. Regionally exhibited work includes photolithos, etchings, woodblock prints, silkscreens, photo and slide transfers, handmade books, and weavings.

Exhibitions include International Museum of Women Online, ARC Gallery; Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, MI; Michigan State University School of Social Work; EVE’s House Silent Auction, Lansing, MI; City Hall, Lansing, MI; Michigan State Capitol; Gallery 2; Hyde Park Art Center; The Smart Museum of Art, Midway Studios. Work is included in the private collection of West Suburban Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program.


Meredith Eastburn

Meredith earned her BA in Art Theory and Practice from Northwestern University (2005) and an MA in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2010), where her thesis project explored the practices of teaching artists. She has a background in museum education and has interned and worked at the Art Institute of Chicago and the MCA. She also worked at the Ragdale Foundation, an artists’ community where she organized public programs, family events, workshops, and school programs. She has been a teaching assistant at SAIC and Marwen and is a teaching artist at the Hyde Park Art Center.

This term Meredith will be teaching Artist Books and Alternative Distribution: Trade, Share, Give, Post.

Adam Ekberg

MFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; BA, Wheaton College. Ekberg has extensive teaching experience as a college level educator, exhibiting artist, and curator. Ekberg’s work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, and was recently exhibited at Platform Gallery, Seattle. Upcoming exhibitions (2009) include a show at Thomas Robertello Gallery 2009 and in a show called Element of Photography, Museum of Contemporary Art. Other past exhibitions include
Fifty/50 Gallery, Gallery 2, Independent Project Space, the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation, The Portland Museum of Art, and Loyola University Museum of Art.

William Estrada

BFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; holds a Special 10 K-12 Certification from the State of Illinois. Has worked with grass-roots organziations for the past 8 years, and continues to participate in varoius community projects in the Chicago area. Works as an artist-in-residence at Telpochcalli Elementary School through C.A.P.E. and various community schools through HPAC, Pros Arts Studios and A.R.T.


Megan Euker

Megan received a MFA and BFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is a Fulbright Scholar and Illinois Art Council Grant recipient. Recent local exhibitions include a solo show at Linda Warren Gallery. Megan is currently a painting & drawing professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Early College Program.

Delores Fortuna

Dan Gamble

Dan received his B.F.A. in Printmaking from The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and M.F.A. in Painting & Drawing from The University of New Mexico. Teaching experience includes Painting Instructor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at the San Francisco Art Institute. Dan recently had a solo exhibition at Zg Gallery in Chicago, Illinois.

Maria Gaspar

BFA, Pratt Institute, NYC. Teaching experience includes Urban Gateways, Afterschool Matters and Pros Arts Studios, in addition to the Hyde Park Art Center. Recent Chicago exhibitions include Polvo Gallery, Casa Michoacan and Marwen Foundation.


Aron Gent

Aron Gent resides in Chicago, IL where he received a degree in photography from Columbia College Chicago. His work is in the collection at the Milwaukee Art Museum and has been exhibited at the Hyde Park Art Center, Houston Center for Photography, Concertina Gallery and GASP Project Space in Boston. He currently teaches at the Hyde Park Art Center, is the photography editor for Proximity Magazine and manages Blackpoint Editions LTD.

Ada Rima Grybauskas

MFA, BFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Teaching experience includes Morraine Valley Community College, Lill Street Studios, South Chicago Art Center, SAIC, Suburban Fine Arts Center, and Riverside Arts Center. Professional experience as a sculptor/model maker includes Asylum Entertainment, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and Crick Pictures.


Jeriah Hildwine

Fellowship recipient at Vermont Studio Center and Hoffberger School of Painting. Solo exhibitions include: Foyer Gallery, Sacred Grounds, Hey Juan’s. Katy Hollander

Holly Holmes

Holly earned her BFA at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 2000, and has shown in several solo and group exhibitions throughout Chicago, including GARDENfresh, Union League Club, and Jinx Cafe, Mess Hall, and Three Walls. Her paintings range in techniques and mediums of support including canvas, rag board, paper and panel, sometimes working with encaustic on wood as well. Holly’s paintings are often allegories of apocalypse and destruction, brought on by excess, waste and the rapid change of our environment. The landscapes utilize naïve or awkward spatial relationships, elaborate designs that often create depth from flatness. There is an interest in pushing this flatness to create visually unnerving compositions, so that the spaces have a kind of built in menace.

This term Holly will be teaching Encaustic Painting.

Alessandra Kelley

Shannon Kerrigan

Shannon has worked for some of Chicago’s preeminent Arts Organizations including; Artsbridge, ARC Gallery, Chicago Public Art and Redmoon Theatre. A decade of teaching experience includes: Gallery 37, A.R.T., The Chicago Park District and Lill Street. Since joining the Hyde Park Art Center in 2000 Shannon has been an artist in residence in over a dozen schools in a variety of programs. Currently the Curriculum Developer and Lead Artist at the University of Chicago Charter High School Woodlawn Campus. Last year Shannon completed two commissions for private collectors and her metal work was included in shows at HPAC and The Chicago Art Source.

Shannon Kerrigan

Friedhard Kiekeben

Trained at the Royal College of Art, London, and in Frankfurt, Germany. After 15 years of living in the UK the artist is now based in the USA where he is a Professor of Printmaking at Columbia College, Chicago. Kiekeben’s works of art take form as digital wall drawings, etched and printed metal Friezes and sculptures, and sequences of original prints. Projects often include tailor made and site-specific installations - such as ‘Cascade’ - and are exhibited internationally in private and public galleries and museums.

Basia Krol

MFA from Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw Poland. Background in painting, drawing, printmaking and mixed media. Recipient of 3 Artists in Residency programs across US. Krol recently had a one person show at Vanderpoel Museum and is an active member of CAC Gallery in Chicago where she also exhibits her work. Previously Krol volunteered as Director for SCB Gallery in Chicago giving alternative exhibition space to local emerging artists. Basia Krol exhibits her work locally and receives many portrait and mural commissions. Teaching experience includes 3 years of teaching in public schools and private international schools in Warsaw and, recently, private lessons in her studio.

This term Basia will be teaching Nature Studies and Still Life.

Kirstin Leenaars

Anna Lehner

BA in English with Honors in Art, Writing Certificate, Pennsylvania State University. Completing a degree in Interior Design at Harrington College of Design. Experience includes the Goodman Theatre (costume shop stitcher), International House of Blues (visiting artist), Chicago Cultural Center (adult quilting instructor), and various community sites.

Debbie Lekousis

BFA, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Teaching experience includes Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School (preschool though 6th grade art) for 9 years, Hyde Park Art Center. Workshops include Field Museum Holiday Tea, Osaka Garden, Chicago Botanic Garden, Chicago Children’s Museum. Educators’ workshops include Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Public Library, and Chicago Public Schools. Exhibitions include Chicago Children’s Museum, The Japanese Consulate (Chicago), The Fashion Institute of Technology (NY), BareWalls 2003, 2004, and 2005 (SAIC).

BFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Works in a variety of media including photography, video, painting, sculpture, bookmaking, writing and fabric based collages. Designed and taught the multi media arts education program for The Girl Scouts of Greater Indiana Residential Summer Camp.


Lisa Lindvay

Lisa received her BFA in 2005 from University of Pennsylvania Edinborough, and in 2008 completed her MFA at Columbia College. She works primarily in photographic medium, taking an extended look at the physical and psychological currents of her own family and exploring her subjects’ domestic environments. Her work is often an exploration of how an individual identity and altered by one’s familial relationships. She has recently exhibited at Glass Curtain Gallery, Hyde Park Art Center, and in the Fall of 2009 Lisa will exhibit at the Smithsonian and the National Portrait Gallery.

This term, Lisa will be teaching Portrait Photography, Documentary Photography,Intro to Digital Photo and Teen Photography: Personal Narrative.

Jessica Lowery

BA in Sculpture, Loyola University Chicago; BAE, Harron School of Art and Design. Taught children’s mixed-media and ceramics classes and camps at the Indianapolis Art Center for nealry 12 years. Taught adult collage at the IAC for 2 years. Directed the Fine Arts Day camp for the IAC for 3 years. Has been involved in Artreach programs.

Justine Nagan

MA, University of Chicago; BA, University of Wisconsin at Madison. Creating tote bags and quilts for 6 years. Tote bags have been featured at the Smart Museum of Art, the K-fleye fashion show, and on Wisconsin Public Television, as well as over the shoulders of very stylish family members and friends. Currently working in documentary production at Kartemquin Films.


BFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Currently pursuing MAT degree and Elementary Certification at National Louis University in Evanston. Has taught ceramics to children in Oxford, Maine. Drawing instructor for the past three years for an afterschool program in city and suburban elementary schools.


Sarah Nishiura

Received her MFA from Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and has been exhibiting her work in galleries internationally for over 15 years, including SACI Gallery in Florence and Inside Arts in Chicago. Although she works in textile and fabric at HPAC, she has experience with a variety of media, including printmaking and painting.

Kean Sea Park

Studied under his father, one of the top six Oriental artists in Korea. Teaching experience includes the YMCA, University of Chicago, various church groups, and private individual instruction throughout Chicago for over 25 years. Has exhibited throughout Asia and the Chicagoland area. Four-time winner of the Korean National Art Competition.

Meg Peterson

BA in fine arts from the University of Oregon. Teaching experience includes Columbia College, Chicago, Prairie Mountain School, Fairfield Elementary and Kelly Middle School via City of Eugene Parks and Recreation Department. Peterson has also served as a volunteer teacher in Accra, Ghana through Global Volunteer Network and as an Art Coordinator and Workshop Leader for Hollistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability.

Emily Pick

Emily is a certified teacher, having taught at Nettlehorst School, and also recieved her BS from Skidmore College. Recently she has been working with art and literacy to create a curriculum around teaching art through children’s literature. Emily also has experience with a variety of age groups, educational settings, and disciplines where she has linked arts to math, reading, and social development.

Karen Plater

Karen L. Plater has mastered all ten Phases for certification as a teacher of Traditional Japanese Embroidery. As a professional sensei, Karen holds monthly classes in her home studio and is now expanding her teaching locations to include Chicago, IL. She continues to travel to Japan to study with professional embroiderers and recently taught an original design at a retreat in Maine. Her work has been displayed in Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. In October, 2008 she hosted a one-woman show of her embroideries at the University Club of Winter Park, FL.

B.A. Great Books of Western Society, St. John’s College Santa Fe. An artist who specializes in the visual mediums of photography, soft sculpture, installation, and graphic design, Ressman combines these tools with music and academics as well as creative writing to create multimedia experiences that are dynamic and educational. Also studied professional voice, music theory, and composition for over twenty years. Ressman’s main subjects of investigation include the phenomenology of the creative process, the psychology and neurology of memory, and social migration patterns both voluntary and compulsory. Exhibitions include Grass Roots Art in Chicago as well as in Pittsburgh and online. Ressman has been published in national print and online magazines, and received an award from The Baltimore Sun for her creative writing.

Valerie Richards

Experience includes 40 years of teaching graphics and painting at area colleges, art centers, and in numerous senior community and school-based programs. Exhibitions include over 10 years at the Hyde Park Art Center, many printmaking and mural commissions, and numerous collections exhibitions.

This term, Valerie will be teaching Watercolor Painting .



Kelly Rider

Most recently her handmade paper pieces and book arts have been exhibited locally in the 4th International Book and Paper Arts Triennial at Columbia College’s Chicago Center for Book & Paper Arts, the Chicago Public Library’s Books! Chicago Bound and Bedecked show, and Vespine Gallery in Pilsen.

Schreiner has exhibited her paintings at various venues nationally and locally at the Union Arts League, Rowland Contemporary Gallery and the Contemporary Art Workshop.

Founder and executive director of Euro Undereground. Teaching experience includes A.R.T., Catherine Cook School, the Cook County Office of the Public Guardian, and the Evanston Art Center. Upcoming projects include a group exhibition at the Smart Museum, University of Chicago and a long-term residency within Chicago Public Schools’ fine arts magnet program. Sokolow’s work is in the permanent collection at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

Mary Tepper

Worked with architectural stained glass for seven years in a number studios, including Bauhaus Apprenticeship Institute, WIll Hamm Stained Glass, Altamira Art Glass, Turcotte Art Glass, Discovery, Chaos Art Glass, Discovery Center, Two Fish Art Glass. Art Glass on display in galleries around the country and experience restoring antique windows for a historic monument.

Performances include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Steppenwolf Studio Theater, and Theater Oobleck. Teaching experience includes School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia College. Vera Videnovich

Attended the Art Insitute of Chicago. Trained as knitting instructor thorugh Craft Yarn Council. Was taught to knit by her father at age 7, became part of a long line of knitters and weavers in her family. Produces line of clothing using wool sheared from her own sheep, which she hand-spins and dyes using natural materials. Has led knitting groups throughout Chicago.

This term Vera will be teaching Knitting.


Valerie Wallace

Valerie Wallace received her MFA in Writing from the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work appears most recently in Rhino, Valparaiso Poetry Review, Drumvoice Revue, Maize, Court Green, Potomac, Convergence and Mid-America Review. She is the recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Literary Award, Oxbow Fellowship and was a finalist for the 2007 Poetry Center of Chicago Prize. She also leads workshops for the Neighborhood Writing Alliance and edits “Deep Dish,” an online monthly poetry series featuring established Chicago writers.

This term Valerie will be teaching Visual Art Poetry.

MA candidate in Interdisciplanary Arts at Columbia College Chicago; BFA in Studio Art, Florida State University. Professional experience includes Hyde Park Art Center, CAPE, Redmoon, Illinois Arts Alliance, community gardening with architreasures, and theatrical set design with Big Works. Group and solo exhibitions in Chicago, Florida, Texas and Washington include works in metal, rubber, mixed media and photographic installation. Recent performance art and movement exhibitions have been held at Chicago Moving Company’s studio in Hamlin Park.

Photographer and digital artist, Mark Werle has worked as a computer tech at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for the last eight years. He works and volunteers at a number of art non-profits in the Chicago area which have included Video Machete, Insight Arts, Women in the Director Chair and the Evanston Art Center.


Rachel Welling

Rachel received a MFA in Painting from Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and BFA from Indiana University.
