Artist Statement

These handmade papers are from collected and preserved materials which are often discarded in daily life to recreate them and display them in a new manner.

This body of work consists of three series of handmade papers. The first series represented is entitled “Domesticity”. It is reflective of daily life and materials discarded in the kitchen. It explores the materials of eggshells, onionskins, and coffee grounds to expose their natural beauty. The works on paper highlight the materials showing them in a new element. These pieces act as visual memories of domestic life, the same way taste lingers on the tongue, or the sent fills the air. Each paper is a result of daily life.

The series entitled “African Cooking” is reflective of the discarded items used in cooking. Many African dishes require the food to simmer for a period of time to bring out the food’s flavor, the same way the onion skins were collected over a period of time to create paper. The onion bags were used to show vibrant color, often seen in African culture. The wrappers from the seasoning cubes were added to the paper to improve its flavor.

The final series of Scrolls is the most recent series which reflects the natural beauty of nature, especially in the summer months. The flowers are used fresh or pressed and preserved from family gardens.
