Artist Statement
I try to develop ways of speaking about physical displacement, cultural dislocation and the inevitable visual and conceptual juxtapositions that arise from attempts to represent place not simply physically, but historically and metaphorically as well.
In my work I try to develop ways of speaking about physical displacement, cultural dislocation and the inevitable visual and conceptual juxtapositions that arise from attempts to represent place not simply physically, but historically and metaphorically as well. I am increasingly drawn to the task of representing specific moments of convergence, intersection and resonance, which, I believe, capture the essence of understanding and experiencing place.
Artist Bio
My work most often deals with questions of travel, place and history.
I teach photography and video at DePaul University in Chicago, where I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Art, Media and Design. I hold a B.F.A. in Film from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee, an M.A. in Communication Studies/Film Production from the University of Iowa and an M.F.A. in Photography from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I work across photo-based media, including silver-based and digital photography, film, linear video and installation video. My work, which most often deals with questions of travel, place and history, has been exhibited and published nationally. I have photographed in and done photographic projects on places as disparate as Greenland, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Quebec, Russia, Albania, Florida, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. I have had one person exhibitions in Chicago, San Francisco, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Lake Forest, Illinois. My work has been published in such journals as Harvard Design Magazine, Whitewalls, and dodgeCity Journal. I also have work in Zoomscape, a monograph by Mitchell Schwarzer.
