June 18 — July 23, 2006, Gallery 2 & 3
Artists include: Elke Claus, Maria Gaspar, Theaster Gates, Kelly Rider, Alice Shaddle, Ryan Swanson, and Mary Tepper among others.
Curated by Blake Bradford, Director of Education
Material Science, an exhibition featuring the artwork by the faculty of the Hyde Park Art Center, will explore the sensory qualities of artistic media. Curated by Blake Bradford, the Director of Education at the Art Center, Material Science will look at how these artists employ techniques, materials and media in their art making processes to heighten the tactile, narrative and emotional experience of the finished artworks.
While they have a prominent role as educators, they are also generating bodies of work and contributing to visual culture in Chicago.
This show will be the faculty’s first opportunity to exhibit in the expansive galleries at the Art Center’s new facility. It will be a proper showcase for their works in painting and drawing, ceramics and photography, and, additionally, in media featured in new classes at the Art Center: metal, digital arts, video and animation.
Over 35 practicing artists instruct hands-on studio programs at the Art Center and partner sites. While they have a prominent role as educators, they are also generating bodies of work and contributing to visual culture in Chicago.
Artists Elke Claus, Maria Gaspar, Theaster Gates, Kelly Rider, Alice Shaddle, Ryan Swanson, and Mary Tepper are among the artists who will have works on view.
Material Science will run from June 18 until July 23, 2006 at the Hyde Park Art Center, 5020 S. Cornell, Chicago, IL. Visit www.hydeparkart.org or call (773) 324-5520 for more information on the exhibition and related events.
