Roger Brown: Calif U.S.A.

June 20 - October 3, 2010, Gallery 4

Roger Brown : Calif U.S.A. is an exhibition focused on the three-dimensional paintings made by Roger Brown during the 1990s featuring the La Conchita clayware. Roger Brown was a collector as much as he was an artist. He covered his California home and studio with objects—ceramics, southwestern knickknacks, and pop culture ephemera—all meticulously arranged and occasionally incorporated into his artwork. This exhibition explores Brown’s domestic collections and how the arranged objects inform his Virtual Still Life series—paintings turned three-dimensional with ceramics shelved in the foreground. The paintings and objects reference and echo each other, infusing his work with reflections on landscape, heritage, religion, and history. Curated by Nicholas Lowe from the School of the Art Institute and the curator of the Roger Brown Collection, Lisa Stone, this exhibition aims to revive these little-known, fascinating works in a lively and educational installation.
