SUN RA LANDS AT THE ART CENTER

Free SUN RA related events in October, November and December at the Hyde Park Art Center
Supported in part by the Illinois Humanities Council and the Terra Foundation for American Art.

A prophetic jazz bandleader, composer and pianist and a self-proclaimed extraterrestrial, Sun Ra was also a visionary thinker whose powerful early writings were influential on Chicago’s South Side African-American intelligentsia in the ’50s. Join us as we explore the extended reach of Sun Ra (1914-1993) - his aesthetic and ideas- on contemporary art and culture with exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, tours and a symposium open to the public.

Titled Traveling the Spaceways: The Astro Black and Other Solar Myths, the program includes many free events that take place at the Hyde Park Art Center unless otherwise noted.Here is a quick reference guide of dates, times and locations:

Oct 17, 6 pm: Film Screening with discussion: Space is the Place (1974) directed by John Coney

Oct 23, 6 pm: Talkingpoint artist talk: Fred Lonberg-Holm, Chicago-based cellist, bandleader and improviser.

Oct 26, 6 pm: Tour with the Curators: Pathways to Unknown Worlds: Sun Ra, El Saturn & Chicago’s Afro-Futurist Underground, 1954-68

Dec 5, 6 pm: Film Screening with discussion: (double feature) Sun Ra: The Magic Sun (1966) by Phill Niblock and Last Angel of History (1995/6) John Akomfrah

*Dec 10, 2 pm: Phil Cohran, trupteter, founder of the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, and one of Sun Ra’s key associates in the late ’50s will discuss Ra and narrate a slide show of rarely seen Arkestra photos.

*Dec 17, 3 pm: AACM programs music by Deshun Mosley in Gallery 1.
