The graphite pencil is the simplest, yet arguably the most demanding of drawing media. Through the purity of pencil students of any level can develop sensitivity, conviction, and a profound connection—both physical and intellectual—with the seen world. We will use still-life, landscape, the human figure, and much more to learn how line alone can, as Paul Klee says, “render visible” color, light, weight, texture, and the complex play between perceived depth and abstract surface. Later in the course we will incorporate ink wash with pencil for tonal drawings. Be prepared to draw in the first class.
