Inspired by artists such as Kahlo, Magritte, Dali, Escher, and Terry Gilliam, students will explore their imaginations. Unexpected contrasts, illogical spaces, as well as mysterious characters and symbols, will inhabit paintings. Despite elements of realism in Surrealism, strong representational skills are not necessary for this class, but a familiarity with water-based mediums and drawing is helpful. Technical and conceptual assistance will be provided throughout the creative process. We will use tracing projectors, stamps, stencils, Xerox copies, collage and frottage to create a variety of works. Abundant use of open studio time is recommended for this class.
