Mary Lou Zelazny
My most recent body of work, Vivarium, seeks to capture the energy and spontaneity of the natural world. Trees and flower bouquets are my primary subjects, which I re-create through a combination of representational painting and abstract mono-print collage. Much like in traditional portraiture, my aim is to capture and accentuate the spirit and vitality of my subjects. The resulting images, rendered with explosive marks and vibrant colors, posses a quiver and a tremor that is simultaneously familiar and uncanny.
My interests and explorations in Vivarium will serve as the starting point for this commission. I propose to envision the prospective commissioner as the tree or flower of their choosing with the aim of capturing and transmuting the underlying essence of their gesture and personality into plant form. This unique, more symbolic interpretation of portraiture will offer a collaborative, imaginative and surprising result for both patron and artist.
