At the Wake: On Blackness and Creating is a panel hosted by The Story Theatre that intends to explore topics of race, sexuality, queerness, and blackness in the creative world. “Wake work” as defined by Sharpe, are the everyday ways in which we mourn and celebrate black life. Moderator Ayanna Bakari will be joined by panelists Terry Guest, Onyx Engobor, and Regina Victor who will expand upon their wake work – how their identities and personal experience influence how they navigate creative and social space, influence what stories they’re interested in telling, and determine the ways they like to tell them.

In Christina Sharpe’s In the Wake: On Blackness and Being, “wake” is defined as such: “grief, celebration, memory… those among the living who, through ritual, mourn… and celebrate…life”
