Dawtas| Mirror, Mirror is a collaborative performance project led by Jamaican artist Yasmin Spiro, bringing together dancers, performers, and sound artists performing with and within Dawtas—a series of sculptures the artist has been creating for over 15 years. This program features performers Jamila Raegan, Anthony Lovejoy, Darling Squire and sound artist DJ Major Taylor. The project, influenced by the work of Jamaican dancer and cultural historian Rex Nettleford, is tied to notions of identity in Jamaica and the Caribbean—considering ritual in dance, bodies in relation to history and land, gender, identity, spiritualism, and mysticism. Documentation by Dadbin Ahn and Sophia Lee. Thank you to the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events for their support of this program through an Individual Artists Program grant.
The performance will be 40 minutes followed by an open reggae dance session with DJ and sound artist Ralph Darden aka DJ Major Taylor.
