Memory Game Day

February 18, 2012 @ 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

This event will be held at the Institute of Puerto Rican Art & Culture.

Play with the art! Explore Bibiana Suárez’s current exhibition at the Hyde Park Art Center, Memoria (Memory), by participating in the artist’s version of the game Memory.Play Suarez’s version of the memory card game while an artist-led group discussion takes place to explain and question the provocative images the artist created.

For this game night, the artworks on view in the gallery have been transformed into several decks of cards for groups to play with and study—finding their own hidden pairs and matching them together. Suárez adopts the childhood game, Memory, as a structure for delving in to subject matter surrounding the “latinization” of US culture.

Teaching artist Jeriah Hildwine, will join Bibiana Suárez in leading the discussion by using the group’s matches and conversation to explain the key points of the installation, ranging from the history of US immigration policies with Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico, to the marketing of exoticism of latino products and entertainment in US popular culture. By the end of the game, participants will have an understanding of topics like Latinidad, the Bracero Program, and Frito Bandito, and be able to recognize their importance in the shaping of contemporary American identity.

This free event is held in conjunction with the current exhibition Memoria (Memory) at the Hyde Park Art Center.  Spaces are limited and refreshments will be served.  Please RSVP to Exhibitions if you are interested in participating.
