Make Sunday a fun day with the Hyde Park Art Center’s Second Sunday event. Spark your family’s creativity with free art activities.
Teaching artist Elke Claus will introduce young artists to block printmaking using safe, kid-friendly scratch foam. Visitors will have the opportunity to sketch a design, carve it into a block, and then use a brayer and ink to transfer it to paper. Later, everyone will get a chance to make a decorative frame for one of their prints.
Meanwhile, teaching artist Candice Latimer will present a “Sculpture Studio Sampler.” This session is based in the classes Candice teaches in the youth department, including painting and drawing, ceramics, and a class called “World Sculpture Studio,” where students learn 3D techniques from around the world. This Second Sunday’s activity will pull from each of those classes, while playing off the name of one of them. Visitors will be introduced to sculpting with air dry clay, quick color mixing demos, and basic hand building methods. Everyone is invited to make a sculpture and paint it. All the materials dry pretty quickly so you can take your art work home with you!
