Anti-racist Art Practice at Home and Abroad
Please join us for an intimate conversation among six artists working in Chicago and Malaysia about how they are developing an anti-racist art practice. Through performance, theater, poetry, installation, sculpture and beyond, these artists are responding to the particular climate and context for artmaking in their localities. How do notions of anti-racism converge or diverge based on the different histories of these places? What are the most urgent strategies working for these artists today? This event has been organized by recent visiting artist Veshalini Naidu as a follow up to her residency exploring these questions. Malaysian artists featured include Dhinesha Karthigesu, and Rupa Subramaniam. Chicago Artists include Jacquelyn Carmen Guerrero, Nikki Patin, and Jenn (Po’Chop) Freeman. Generously supported by Asian Cultural Council.

VideoKaffe “The Space Between Us”

Join us for a live virtual collaboration between SIGN Gallery in Groningen, Netherlands and The Hyde Park Art Center. Through a technique we they call “VK Screen Breach,” a live dancer/performer in Groningen and a Chicago performer will be able to collaborate and perform together virtually. This performance will make a commentary on the world’s present state of isolation and connectivity through the cyberspace, asking questions about the context of the virtual and the tangible through exploring virtual contact experimentation. Featured performers include: Manuel Paolini (Groningen) and Courtney Mackedanz (Chicago). Music by: Kayleigh Beard (Groningen)

Exploring Global Opportunities through the Arts

Join the founder of Chicago based art-library-project space Chuquimarca and Jose Luis Benavides of Sin Cinta Previa: Latinx & Queer Archive Video Series in conversation about exploring global opportunities through the arts. They will discuss their current projects, how to utilize open calls for global opportunities, how to grow an international community through informal means (couch surfing), and how they have handled the global-zoom-art outbreak through their projects.
