Visiting Artist Departure: Suhasini Kejriwal

June 30, 2016 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

The works of the Kolkata-based artist, Suhasini Kejriwal, present densely populated visions across large-scale canvases of tropical flora and fauna or bustling urban scenes, saturated with color, or void of it, altogether. Her sculptures, both large and small scale, lean toward the surreal: a lotus flower composed not of petals but of human hands and feet, spiky cacti, and cubes of fruits, vegetables, kitchen utensils and urban refuse packed tightly. Kejriwal’s recent works take place inside the contemporary Indian urban sphere, excavating the economies and individuals that comprise it. Focusing now on what she calls a “literal looking out,” she uses the scenes around her as a starting point to explore the psychological reactions that they incite and her in others.

Kejriwal received her BFA from Parsons School of Design, New York in 1998, and she completed a Post Graduate Diploma in 1999 and earned an MFA degree in 2006 from Goldsmith’s College in London. Kejriwal has exhibited extensively internationally with solo shows in London, Berlin, Mumbai, Shanghai, as well as participated in multiple exhibitions and biennials within the United States.

While in residence, she will transpose her practice of touring the city on foot while documenting the process through photography to Chicago to develop material for new work.
