Altered States was made possible through a generous donation for catalogue printing from the Playboy Foundation, and donated catalogue design by Judy Brauer.
Curated by Richard DuBeshter, this show provided a sampling of the rich body of work inspired by, created with, or about found objects, by artist in the Chicago area. The artists represented ranged from well known artists such as Don Baum and Barbara Crane to (then) emerging artists such as Carl Johnson and Karen Reimer. The show revealed the wide variety of use of found objects. The approaches in use were as diverse as the objects themselves – as image, as humorous, as psychological tools, reflections of the abstract deterioration of our cultural environment, or as pure form. The artists included in the exhibition shared not only a passion to collect and use the found forms, but to approach the transformation of selected materials in a unique way.
