Selected Shots by Young Artists was the second annual exhibition featured the best work from budding artists enrolled in Chicago Public High Schools. The exhibition included work from students enrolled in Kenwood Academy, King College Prep High School, and Lane Technical High School. Rivaling the talent and skill of many mature artists, these students’ best work to date is often imbued with refreshing passion and keen observations. Featuring both digital and 35mm work by approximately 30 young artists, the images in Selected Shots illustrated the students’ enthusiasm for photography and their excitement to explore various genres, from portraiture and still life to more abstract and manipulated techniques.
In the year 2007, the Art Center exhibited work by Kenwood Academy students only; this year (2008) the exhibition has been opened up to two additional Chicago Public Schools. Selected Shots was curated by Benjamin Jaffe, Tom Cinamon, and Daria McMeans, who are all artists and instructors at the participating schools. The institutions that participated in Selected Shots are dedicated to providing students with a high-quality, comprehensive education that incorporates instruction in the fine arts. King College Prep in the Bronzeville neighborhood is one of Chicago’s strongest selective enrollment schools. Also focused on college preparatory instruction, Lane Tech is located on the northside and is one of the oldest outstanding educational institutions in Chicago. Kenwood Academy serves the Art Center’s immediate constituency and is committed to working in collaboration among students, parents, teachers, and the community to provide a quality education program.
