The exhibition highlights the best photography from budding artists enrolled in Kenwood High School’s Advanced Placement Photography course. Featuring both digital and 35mm photographs by approximately 20 young artists in their senior year, Selected Shots offers a selection of young artists’ work that rivals the talent and skill of many mature photographers. The photographs in Selected Shots illustrate the students’ enthusiasm for the medium and their excitement to explore various genres, from portraiture and still life to more abstract and manipulated techniques. Selected Shots is curated by Benjamin Jaffe, a Chicago artist and the Advanced Placement Photography course instructor at Kenwood Academy. Kenwood Academy serves the Art Center’s immediate constituency and is committed to working in collaboration among students, parents, teachers, and the community to provide a quality education program.
Thoughts from Benjamin Jaffe
“For the past several years I have had the honor of curating a very special show highlighting the unique visions of young artists from Chicago Public High Schools. This show began as a gift to a very special group of my students whose work I felt needed to be shown in a setting befitting the quality of their work. Each successive year the show has grown to include more schools and a broader group of students. Last year I was able to highlight the students of Daria McMeans from Lane Tech and Tom Cinoman from King Prep. High School, as well as students from my own AP program at Kenwood Academy. This year the show centers on the photography, both traditional as well as digitally manipulated, of Seniors from Kenwood Academy only. The students that participated in Selected Shots in the past have gone on to great college careers and individual accolades. The artwork of this show is a collection of work from some of my favorite artists. I hope that you will enjoy them as much as I have.”
