The Way Things Are

According to the artists of The Way Things Are, Bob Peters and David Schutter, this installation functions as a catalogue of the presuppositions, limits, and desires underpinning the practice and reception of the arts. The empty spaces in the grid of the installation will be filled with a total of 487 letters over the course of the exhibition. The letters spell out commonly used phrases and cliches found in academic texts. When confronted with the task of deciphering meaning out of these phrases, the viewer is faced with absurd non-sequiturs, emphasizing the strange language that is accepted among certain professions.
